Like King Tut, only less dead

Working at City Hall is pretty cool. The building itself is gorgeous, and walking outside at lunch is great. There's also a lot of energy in the building with lots of events being held in the main lobby, including the Queen swinging by. The Hall also tends to attract some homeless people. I chatted with one guy about his upcoming job interview, and another guy about the dangers of drugs in the tattooing industy. You learn a lot in the men's washroom.

I know what I like

On Thursday afternoon, the lovely Miss McLaughlin joined me to take in the 18th Century French Realism exhibit at the Edmonton Art Gallery. I quite enjoyed seeing what Cezanne and the boys had to offer. There is a certain austerity to the works offset by the emotions in the captured expressions of everyday reality. We also caught the Modern Art exhibit. I was less fond of these works. One in particular I dubbed "The Rotating Table of Crap".

Expanding the horizons

A long while ago, Jones had an idea to start a webboard that would raise the signal-noise ratio of the SU Webboard. He invited me, along with a few others, to join. I declined. Now, I have my first post on POI. I'm also proud to announce that my blog has been visited, linked through POI, by members of Human Resources Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Welcome!

Up next: the uselessness of the monarchy.

Her Majesty

It was raining in Regina. Now it's raining in Edmonton. The Queen must be some sort of rain god.

Bah

Driving in from Vegreville on Sunday morning, I couldn't get off the Yellowhead, so I decided to go all the way to West Ed. I hate shopping. The conversations tend to go as follows:

Store person: "Well, you look like a size 30."
Me: "Fuck you."

I then forgot where I parked and spent an hour and a half looking for my car.

Biggest nerd gathering since Council

Heather calls me at 11pm last night telling me to join her, Steve and Catrin for the midnight showing of Star Wars. Having not seen the first two episodes, and not particularly liking the final three, I of course agreed. Movie openings can be a lot of fun. And I figured it would be fun to piss off geeks by loudly whispering, "What's a Jedi?".

At the start of the movie, this usher says, "Please turn off all cell phones, pagers...and lightsabers". Awesome.

I thought the movie was entertaining. However, the dialogue was atrocious, and Anakin's ultimate conversion was very poorly done. I generally agree with Peter Travers' review. But I had fun.

Good news

It looks like they got it all.

Night Owl

Mornings are meant for idiots and communists. I overslept slightly this morning and was a bit late for work as a result. As luck would have it, I had to walk through a staff meeting to get to my desk when I arrived. Funny stuff.

This Belinda Stronach thing is amusing. I particularly like Harper's complaint that she didn't object when the Tory caucus unanimously endorsed booting the Liberals. As if he would have tolerated dissent on that issue. I'd love to get more involved in federal politics, but all the parties right now are just so fucking stupid.

And so it goes

Lying in bed at 1:30am on the first night in my new place, I felt hungry. And then I thought to myself, "Dammit. I have no food." The next day, I went with the time-honoured tradition of going home and raiding my parents' fridge.

An eventful week it has been. Wednesday night I went to the annual Churchill Society banquet. Some day, I hope to have a dude who pounds a mace on the floor three times and says, "Pray silence for your President" everytime before I speak. Thursday morning was the annual Premier's Prayer Breakfast with Ralph and 1300 of his closest friends. Nice event. Thanks to Chairman Jim for that invitation. And the transition Board dinner that evening, where I said a few words on the need for respect for student politicians. My term may be done, but I'm holding on to the free dinners for as long as possible. :-)

Dad's doing well. I've been busy since school ended with work and articling applications. Need plans for the long weekend.

Sometimes, life sucks

My dad had surgery yesterday. I visited him in the hospital today. God was it tough.

I'm Back

Out with the old, in with the new.
